Trust your own wings

I had read this story somewhere sharing it with my readers…

There was a huge banyan tree in a forest, spreading out its mighty branches. Each of these mighty branches bore many smaller secondary branches which in turn bore many more. This kind of repeated branching resulted in small twigs with leaves on them. On one such twig sat the little sparrow.

The sparrow was chirping away merrily. Its high-pitched notes filled the air and resonated through the forest. It was a happy song.

Suddenly, there came a strong gust of wind which soon developed into a storm. At first, the twig on which the sparrow sat, began to quiver and quake; shiver and shake. As the wind grew in its strength and intensity, the whole branch began to sway uncontrollably. soon, the huge banyan tree itself was reeling under the impact of the powerful storm. It was trembling as the furious wind began to lash at it. In a moment, the little branch on which the sparrow was sitting snapped. The branch fell to the ground.

What happened to the little sparrow?

“Nothing happened to the sparrow because it just flew away. It fluttered its wings even as the branch broke and it just flew away.”

Moral of the story is

Bird sitting on the tree is never afraid of the branch breaking because its trust is not on the branch but its wings

Similarly in life when problems and disaster strike with full force and try to uproot you, do not depends on anyone else but on your own wings. Wings of faith and self-confidence.

Make right choices

In past few months I watched a couple of shows on Indian Television and observed that most of the story lines have one central character mostly female who is very good at heart, nice person with strong moral values, who never does anything wrong or bad with anyone and then there is another negative character who finds ways to trouble or harm this person, but still the good person keeps on tolerating all this and never even raises voice and even if the other person is caught while doing wrong to the first person, the first person immediately forgives and gives him another chance and things continue.  Inherently all the television shows are battle between good and evil wherein after thousands of episodes finally good wins and audience feel happy.

But if we closely look at how these shows are portraying the thoughts, the values of Indian women it feels really sad. Do women really still think that way ? Does being a good person means you have to constantly tolerate all injustice without raising your voice or even feeling bad? Do good people never even get angry?

In one such shows husband is cheating on his wife with one of his colleague who is only after him for money. One fine day he  throws his wife out of home and asks his girlfriend to stay with him. Not only this he finds opportunities to humiliate his wife in front of people. What wife does in such situation????? Instead of taking any legal aid or contacting any NGOs which assist women in need, She says only that girl is culprit, my husband was very nice with me before she came into his life and he really loves me. After repeated insults also she does not understand that her husband is equally wrong, she goes and cleans the household when no-one is inside and takes care of her husband when he is sick. Is this being good or foolish? What are such shows trying to show people even if someone treats you like doormat keep on caring for him and allow him to mistreat you and justify it to you saying he is not bad and loves me very much….

Another show shows a girl praying to goddess and a guy comes and starts beating her from behind with stick, but she does not even notice it as goddess protects her. I am strong believer in god but also believe that “God helps those who help themselves“. If you look closely at idols of Hindu goddesses most of them are shown killing demons, stepping on them. So even god does not ask you to keep on tolerating violence or injustice but teaches to fight against evil forces. Then why can’t we show that  from her devotion she gains strength to fight the evil and strikes him back.

There are many such example of struggle between good or bad in TV shows which portray one character as 100% good and another as 100% bad. But in real world people are not 100% good or bad but a lot of shades in between that. When will these TV shows start portraying more realistic characters ? Create a real picture of 21st century woman who has proved herself equal to men, who may be loving, caring and dedicated to her husband and family but also expects the samething in return from others, does not only keep on giving and giving and giving, but also expects acknowledgement, support and respect from others.

On this whole background it is noteworthy to hear the thoughts of George R. R. Martin writer of best-selling international series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire, which was later adapted into the critically acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones who says that nobody is inherently good or evil, but in the mind of each person there is constant battle between good and bad and its only matter of making right choices.

FDR Memorial

FDR memorial located in Washington D.C. is a national memorial dedicated to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of  the United States.I had the privilege of visiting this place about a year back. Spread out over a area of 7.5 acres this has series of sections designed to feel like room, each room covers one of FDR’s Presidential terms (1933 to 1945), and the historical events that took place during that time, through quotes, sculpture, and landscape elements.

Prologue Room– This section was added later to memorial in 2001, includes the statue depicting FDR  in his wheelchairl.

Walk around the right side of the wall in front of you, and notice the bronze-cast Presidential Seal as you enter the first room of the memorial.

Room One (First term 1933 to 1937)

First room represents Great Depression. It includes FDR’s famous quote “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” Under that quote is a bronze relief depicting his inaugural parade.

Room Two (Second Term 1937-1941)

Second room has three scenes depicting the condition on American citizens during Great Depression. “Rural Family” is depicted suffering from the effects of drought, dust bowls, and poverty. “A bread line” is also shown, representing the poverty and desperation of the working class during the Great Depression. The Fireside Chat depicts the hope that Roosevelt’s inspiring words gave to ordinary people. The large stepped waterfall represents the Tennessee Valley Authority dam building projects, which helped stimulate the economy and electrify an area hard hit by the economic collapse.

Room Three (Third Term 1941-1945)

Third room represents World War II. A waterfall crashes over scattered boulders, suggesting the destruction and violence of World War II. This room also has statue of FDR with pet dog “Fala“.

Room Four (Forth Term 1945)

Fourth and final room has still pool of water with a relief above depicting the President’s funeral procession. It also has statue of first lady Eleanor Roosevelt with a United Nations emblem behind her to honor her contribution to the UN and human right causes.

Time Zone

Read this somewhere on social media

> New York is 3 hours ahead of California, but it does not make California slow.

> Someone graduated at the age of 22, but waited five years before securing a good job! Someone did a job for 5 years and then did the graduation.

> Someone became a CEO at 25 and died at 50. While another became a CEO at 50 and lived to 90 years.

> Obama retires at 55, but Trump starts at 70.

Absolutely everyone in this world works based on their Time Zone. People around you might seem to go ahead of you; some might appear to be behind you. But everyone is running their own RACE, in his or her own TIME.

Don’t envy them or mock them. They are in their TIME ZONE, and you are in yours! Life is all about timing and the right moment to act. You’re not LATE. You’re not EARLY. You are very much ON TIME, and in your TIME ZONE

Destiny set up for you. Make today your day!!

Winter Is Here

After a long wait from fans over the world the much anticipated season 7 of Game of thrones has aired yesterday. If we look at the story line of this show it is struggle and politics between houses of seven kingdoms of ‘Westeros‘ for power , to conquer the Iron throne.

If we try to look into the reasons for the huge success of this shows we realize that the story line with all its twist and turns, the characters and dialogues touch the viewers heart somewhere and right from the first episode the person gets so involved in it, that you just cannot stop thinking about what happens next…..Sometime back I had read it somewhere , that when it comes to game of thrones there are only two types of people “Those who love it” or “Those who haven’t watched it“………

So for all Game of thrones lovers across the world sharing below some of my favorite dialogues which in a way I feel apply to our lives also

People work together when it suits them. They’re loyal when it suits them. They love each other when it suits them, and they kill each other when it suits them.”

Money buys man’s silence for time  A bolt in heart forever”

What is honor compared to a woman’s love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms . . . or the memory of a brother’s smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy.”

The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die.”

When you tear out a man’s tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you’re only telling the world that you fear what he might say.”

“Bran thought about it. ‘Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?’ ‘That is the only time a man can be brave,’ his father told him.”

Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what’s on the other side?”

“Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.” “A shadow on the wall,” Varys murmured, “yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.”

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some, are given a chance to climb. They refuse, they cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.”

And last but not least my most favorite one

Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.”

PERFECTION is lot of little things done right

A German once visited a temple under
construction where he saw a sculptor making an idol of God…Suddenly he noticed a similar idol lying nearby…
Surprised, he asked the sculptor, “Do you
need two statues of the same idol?”
“No,” said the sculptor
without looking up, “We need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage…”

The gentleman
examined the idol and found no apparent damage…

“Where is the damage?” he asked.
“There is a scratch on the nose of the idol.” said the sculptor, still
busy with his work….

“Where are you going to install the idol?”

The sculptor replied that it would be
installed on a
pillar twenty feet high…

“If the idol is that far who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?”
the gentleman asked.

The sculptor stopped work, looked up at the gentleman, smiled and said,

“I will know it…”

The desire to excel is exclusive of the fact whether someone else appreciates it or not….

“Excellence” is a
drive from inside, not outside….

Excellence is not for
someone else to notice but for your own satisfaction and efficiency.
