Game of thrones

After a long wait final season of Game of thrones has aired, for me this is the best and most interesting  TV show I watched till date. Being a true GOT fan I would like to share few of my favourite quotes with my readers

“Power resides where men believe it resides. It’s a trick. A shadow on the wall. And a very small man can cast a very large shadow.” – Lord Varys

“The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.” – Ned Stark

“There is only one god and his name is Death, and there is only one thing we say to Death: ‘Not today.’” – Syrio Forell

“Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.” – Tyrion Lannister

“Any man who must say ‘I am the King’ is no true King” – Tywin Lannister

“You know nothing, Jon Snow” – Ygritte

“Leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe.” – Arya Stark

“The freedom to make my own mistakes was all I ever wanted” – Mance Rayder

“Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some, are given a chance to climb. They refuse, they cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.” – Petyr Baelish

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground” – Cersei Lannister

If we die we’ll die but first we will live

Sometime back I was rewatching one of my favourite TV show “Game of thrones” and in one of the scenes Ygritte tells Jon Snow ” If we die we’ll die but first we will live”

This left me thinking right since a young age we are being told study hard, get good grades, get a decent job, focus on your career growth, get married at right age, have kids and so on life goes on, one goal after another, one responsibility after another….

What about your hobbies, your passion, places you want to visit, things you like do ? Some say that once I have built my career or fulfilled my responsibilities that is by the age of 40 or 50 I will be free from worries and then I will do the things I always wanted to do, but are you sure you are going to live that long, what if you die before that???

We make plans for 10 or 20 years down the line when we don’t even know we are going to see tommorow’s day…

Moral is each day alongwith your work and personal responsibilities find sometime to do something you love to do, do not keep on postponing things for retirement, do not just live the length of your life – live the width as well.

Lastly I would like to quote words of poem I read somewhere

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
   Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
   Tomorrow will be dying.

Make right choices

In past few months I watched a couple of shows on Indian Television and observed that most of the story lines have one central character mostly female who is very good at heart, nice person with strong moral values, who never does anything wrong or bad with anyone and then there is another negative character who finds ways to trouble or harm this person, but still the good person keeps on tolerating all this and never even raises voice and even if the other person is caught while doing wrong to the first person, the first person immediately forgives and gives him another chance and things continue.  Inherently all the television shows are battle between good and evil wherein after thousands of episodes finally good wins and audience feel happy.

But if we closely look at how these shows are portraying the thoughts, the values of Indian women it feels really sad. Do women really still think that way ? Does being a good person means you have to constantly tolerate all injustice without raising your voice or even feeling bad? Do good people never even get angry?

In one such shows husband is cheating on his wife with one of his colleague who is only after him for money. One fine day he  throws his wife out of home and asks his girlfriend to stay with him. Not only this he finds opportunities to humiliate his wife in front of people. What wife does in such situation????? Instead of taking any legal aid or contacting any NGOs which assist women in need, She says only that girl is culprit, my husband was very nice with me before she came into his life and he really loves me. After repeated insults also she does not understand that her husband is equally wrong, she goes and cleans the household when no-one is inside and takes care of her husband when he is sick. Is this being good or foolish? What are such shows trying to show people even if someone treats you like doormat keep on caring for him and allow him to mistreat you and justify it to you saying he is not bad and loves me very much….

Another show shows a girl praying to goddess and a guy comes and starts beating her from behind with stick, but she does not even notice it as goddess protects her. I am strong believer in god but also believe that “God helps those who help themselves“. If you look closely at idols of Hindu goddesses most of them are shown killing demons, stepping on them. So even god does not ask you to keep on tolerating violence or injustice but teaches to fight against evil forces. Then why can’t we show that  from her devotion she gains strength to fight the evil and strikes him back.

There are many such example of struggle between good or bad in TV shows which portray one character as 100% good and another as 100% bad. But in real world people are not 100% good or bad but a lot of shades in between that. When will these TV shows start portraying more realistic characters ? Create a real picture of 21st century woman who has proved herself equal to men, who may be loving, caring and dedicated to her husband and family but also expects the samething in return from others, does not only keep on giving and giving and giving, but also expects acknowledgement, support and respect from others.

On this whole background it is noteworthy to hear the thoughts of George R. R. Martin writer of best-selling international series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire, which was later adapted into the critically acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones who says that nobody is inherently good or evil, but in the mind of each person there is constant battle between good and bad and its only matter of making right choices.

Winter Is Here

After a long wait from fans over the world the much anticipated season 7 of Game of thrones has aired yesterday. If we look at the story line of this show it is struggle and politics between houses of seven kingdoms of ‘Westeros‘ for power , to conquer the Iron throne.

If we try to look into the reasons for the huge success of this shows we realize that the story line with all its twist and turns, the characters and dialogues touch the viewers heart somewhere and right from the first episode the person gets so involved in it, that you just cannot stop thinking about what happens next…..Sometime back I had read it somewhere , that when it comes to game of thrones there are only two types of people “Those who love it” or “Those who haven’t watched it“………

So for all Game of thrones lovers across the world sharing below some of my favorite dialogues which in a way I feel apply to our lives also

People work together when it suits them. They’re loyal when it suits them. They love each other when it suits them, and they kill each other when it suits them.”

Money buys man’s silence for time  A bolt in heart forever”

What is honor compared to a woman’s love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms . . . or the memory of a brother’s smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy.”

The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die.”

When you tear out a man’s tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you’re only telling the world that you fear what he might say.”

“Bran thought about it. ‘Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?’ ‘That is the only time a man can be brave,’ his father told him.”

Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what’s on the other side?”

“Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.” “A shadow on the wall,” Varys murmured, “yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.”

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some, are given a chance to climb. They refuse, they cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.”

And last but not least my most favorite one

Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.”

Game of Life

In past few month I experienced a big setback in life, saw how people play games against you, experienced how cruel people can be, learnt a lesson of lifetime. Some days I just felt there is nothing left in life now and prayed for death😕😕

Days seemed to be dragging and long with practically nothing to do and  just to pass time I started watching some old movies and tv shows. Among these only some stories, scenes or dialogues left a deep impression on my mind and lifted my mood from depression, gave me the strength to cope with difficulties or hope to continue….

First one among them was

Shawshank Redemption– In this movie a banker is falsely accused of murdering his wife and her lover and sent to prison for life sentence.Inspite of all the hardship he faced in his days in prison he works towards betterment of prison library and also makes use of his banking knowledge to help the guards in money laundering and finally managed to escape after spending almost 20 years in prison and becomes a millionaire even though by illegal means. After seeing this I thought very deeply is my situation more worst than this guy no right?then why am I thinking of giving up ?why am I wishing to die ?  What if somebody posted politics with me ? What if all my efforts of past few years were wasted ? Knowledge which I gained till now is still with me, I will rebuild my life from ashes and achieve even better position than what I had before. At this juncture I remembered a proverb I had read somewhere “They tried to bury us but did not know we were seeds“.

Next among them are

The Bucket List – In this movie two terminally ill men decide to explore life and make a bucket list comprising all the things they haven’t tried before…This made me look back on my life did I really live me my life fully? If I were to die tommorow will I not have regrets about the things I did not do? So I started to prepare my own wish list , my own bucket list which I have already shared with my readers in my previous post..Sharing it again for my readers…

Bucket List

Video on Facebook– While browsing on Facebook I saw a video posted which had warning as “This video may make you quit your job …” The video urged people watching to not waste a life working on a job, waiting for weekend and paying rent and in the end regret for things they wanted to do but did not do… Instead find their dream, their passion leaving fear of failure aside. This left me thinking what is my passion? what is it that will give me true happiness and satisfaction, I am yet to find my answer..

Last but not the least…

I am a sensitive person who gets upset on even small offending remarks from people. And over last few days I had to go through many offending question initially I tried to hide my failure from people giving false excuses but while watching old seasons of “Game of thrones” I came across this dialogue which made me realise that more and more I try to hide my failure from people more and more their questions will hurt me instead it is better to face my failure and boldly admit it.

Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor and it can never be used to hurt you. ~Tyrion Lanniser, Game of Thrones
